Mercury Retrograde June 2014

It’s that time of the year once again when Mercury turns retrograde. It happens June 7, 2014. With Mercury retrograde June 2014 in Gemini, Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, offers a somewhat varying perspective than Western astrology. In Vedic astrology, retrogression is seen as a sign of strength.

When a planet is retrograde, it is closer to the earth than usual. People feel its presence more powerfully, for better or worse.  Retrogression connotes the notion of repetition, renewal, and revisiting of situations.

Mercury turns retrograde three times a year and Mercury retrograde June 2014 is a powerful time. Mercury rules the sign of Gemini. Thus, Mercury retrograde and in Gemini makes it doubly powerful.

The times to exercise caution are the days when a planet goes from being direct (forward motion) to retrograde or vice versa.  For any planet to change direction, it first has to slow down,  stop moving, and then slowly regain momentum. The three or four days preceding and following a retrograde cycle are also quite impactful.

Mercury turns retrograde at 4:55 AM PST on June 7, 2014. This is problematic for Mercury more so than other planets. As the second fastest moving planet after the Moon, Mercury is quick, impulsive, and changeable. Its restlessness makes Mercury retrograde in Gemini a slow moving planetary manifesto.  Being dual-minded, Mercury creates the desire to want to pursue at least two varying paths simultaneously. Mercury’s innate ability to multi-task is hampered by its slow motion. There can be bouts of frustration which impact the nervous system (or majja dhatu in Ayurveda) due to the slow moving impediment.

Mercury regains half its normal speed mid-month. It starts slowing down again on June 21. On July 1, at 4:45 AM PST, Mercury is at a standstill again as it comes out of retrogression.  Mercury regains half its normal speed on July 7 and is back to its full speed by July 13, 2014.

Both Mercury and Gemini indicate communication (primarily written) as well as technology.  With Mercury now moving at 10% of its regular pace, there is the potential for communication to be stalled or disrupted.  It may take multiple conversations or emails to convey a particular point. There is emphasis on the thinking mind but the thoughts may be repetitive.

As the indicator for commerce, Mercury is powerfully able to use its versatility and intellect to create opportunities for itself. Gemini also represents skills using the hands. Yet, with Mercury retrograde, there can be the refining and rewording of contracts and agreements.

Mercury is currently with Jupiter in Gemini. Both Mercury and Jupiter are the education planets in Vedic astrology, so it could be a good time for study. Mercury takes on the guise of its house mates.  Jupiter’s presence in Gemini helps stabilize Mercury.  Jupiter will move into Cancer on June 18, 2014.  Mercury remains in Gemini until July 31, 2014 and then joins an exalted Jupiter in Cancer.

Aries, Taurus, and Gemini ascendants may be most impacted by Mercury retrograde June 2014.  Those in a Mercury planetary cycle will most feel the impact of Mercury retrograde in Gemini.  You may schedule a personal astrology reading to learn how Mercury retrograde may impact your life.
