The Slow Mover Saturn Hobbles Into Libra

Om Sham Shri Shanaischaraya Namah

Like the Jeffersons, Saturn is movin’ on up and there’s gonna be a whole lotta shaking goin’ on. We assess a planet’s impact by seeing what sign of the zodiac it’s in and what that means for us individually as well as those with whom we interact.  The longer that a planet occupies a sign or zodiacal constellation, the more long-lasting its results. We can liken it to our inhabiting a hotel for a few days or being at our residence, which we have occupied for years. While the Moon inhabits each of the 12 constellations for 2.5 days, Saturn stays for 2.5 years. Definitely enough time for us to feel its impact. We will feel the impact as Saturn enters Libra.

In the Eastern or “Vedic” system of astrology (Jyotish), Saturn entered Libra tonight. The impact that Saturn has on each individual will vary depending on the personal dynamics of their chart and what planetary cycle they are running. We pay particular attention to where a person’s natal Saturn is placed and where their Moon is placed. It’s also key to see what is natally placed in Libra, as well as what house of the astrological chart it is for a person (i.e. first house, tenth house, etc.), and what else natally occupies Libra.

Saturn has a strong need for security. Generally, whatever house Saturn is transiting in your chart, you will seek out methods to help make you feel secure about the matters related to that house. Again, you will do so in ways indicated by your own personal astrological tendencies.  Saturn is considered to be “exalted” or in a very strong placement when he is Libra.
Saturn is connoted with dark places such as basements. It’s moved out of the basement and into a spa and it’s ready to leave its mark. Saturn or Shani (phonetically shun-nee) also represents that which we shun in our lives.  So, a great lesson will be to make peace with the matters of the house that Libra represents in your chart, rather than to continually avoid them.
As an exalted natural malefic, Saturn can be likened to a virulent storm. We know where it’s headed, but we can’t anticipate what damage it will leave it will leave in its wake. The best we can do is to plan ahead and make well-informed choices. Panicking isn’t going to change anything or be in your best interest. What might this Saturn in Libra bring? The appropriate answer is, “It depends on your chart.” Remember that in Jyotish, we use the sidereal zodiac, not the tropical zodiac that is utilized in Western astrology, so everything in your chart shifts back 24 degrees, or usually one sign.

The personal impact Saturn enters Libra depends on your chart, but here are some generic examples of how these natal Saturn placements may play out, which assumes all other factors being equal. For a Leo ascendant who has a natal Saturn in Libra in their third house, they will have powerful, courageous siblings who will create a lot of conflict. If you are a Cancer ascendant with Libra as your fourth house, then you may feel the urge to move or make major home improvements. You may find issues with contractors and may feel dissatisfied with the repairs or your new place of residence.

For Capricorn ascendants with Libra ruling the tenth house of career, this Saturn brings a position of great authority or responsibility, but they will feel very burdened by the workload and uncomfortable with being in charge.

Those who have Libra ascendants will come out of a period of introspection or withdrawal. They will take on a new form of exercise designed to help them lose weight. Be careful not to tear or injure your muscles. Their wardrobe and hairstyle may change significantly and they will take a lot of short trips over the next few years.

As an Aries ascendant, Saturn will be in your seventh house, the house of relationships and partnerships. This will be a time for re-evaluating your personal and professional partnerships and taking on the issue of “who’s in charge here?”

Saturn has often gotten a bad rap, in that it is a “malefic” rather than a “benefic” like Jupiter or Venus. Yet, being slow moving, it can teach us very valuable life lessons if we are willing to listen. It can make us stronger by facing up to challenges and help us make priorities  in our life.  Contrary to popular belief, Saturn is there to help us break free of our patterns and conditioning, rather than punish us. It is a matter of perspective; we often lack the objectivity to step back and look at the events of our lives in a semi-detached manner. That is why people often seek out astrologers or counselors, to help them put a blurry picture in focus.

Please note that the more important transit of Saturn into a sign is considered to be its final entry into that sign. Saturn will be in Libra until mid-May and then retrograde back into Virgo (where’s it’s been since 9/9/09) and then re-enter Libra in August and stay until 2014. You may then feel the true impact of Saturn as Saturn enters Libra.
